What is renewable
Ecotricity is harnessed from natural sources, like the wind, the sun and water, that don't pollute and don't contribute to climate change.
We call these Deep Green, because they're the ultimate in clean electricity generation. They don't involve any burning and offer a pollution-free, endless source of electricity.
Creating new Deep Green sources is crucial in the fight against climate change. And that's where we come in. We're building 500MW of new Deep Green energy by 2015. This is a significant boost to green electricity capacity in the UK and will have a major positive impact on the environment; reducing Carbon Dioxide, other gas emissions and pollution. Every unit of green electricity that we make directly replaces electricity normally generated from conventional polluting sources.
There are other sources of green electricity. We call these Pale Green, because in most cases they involve some form of burning and there is some associated environmental impact. Examples of Pale Green sources include sewage, landfill gas and biomass. The first two provide a non-intermittent and comparatively cheap source of power and in most cases enable significant greenhouse gas savings compared to conventional sources. Pale Green sources helped us to kick start the UK's green electricity market place and to get us where we are today, but they are no longer a feature of our generation.
Will switching to Ecotricity make a difference?
Yes. Changing the way they make our electricity is the biggest single thing any of us can do to fight climate change, because conventional, or ‘brown’, electricity is the biggest single cause of climate change in the UK – responsible for over 30% of our CO2 emissions. The greatest change you can make is switching to Ecotricity. The fact that they have topped the green build league table so convincingly for the last five years demonstrates their commitment to create, and build, more sources of green electricity than any other power company. The table above (image arrow) shows that over five years they’ve spent an average of £450 per customer per year building new sources of green energy.
Their closest rival spent less than £30 per customer over the same period.
What tariffs do Ecotricity offer?
Whichever one of the tariffs you choose you can be sure you have switched to one of the greenest tariffs available.
New Energy – all the green energy in this tariff comes from Ecotricity’s own turbines. This year it’s just under 46% and has grown consistently as they built more windmills. The balance is ‘brown’ electricity which they buy from other suppliers.
New Energy Plus –This is the same as our New Energy tariff, but topped up with green electricity from existing renewable sources (instead of brown) making it a 100% green tariff. You still get the same commitment from Ecotricity to build new sources of green energy. This tariff costs around £20 more per household over the year because they are topping up with other peoples green energy.
Will Ecotricity cost me more?
No. Typically it will cost nothing more, because our policy (and our promise) is to match the standard price of regional suppliers for their ‘brown’ electricity across the UK. Most people are still with the regional supplier so switching to Ecotricity won’t cost a penny more. If you’ve switched to a cheaper deal though, we will cost a little more – we can’t price match the price cutters and keep building new sources of green energy.
